Wedding Planning 101: A Conversation with Weddings by Princy

Planning a wedding is more than just a party; it is a full-scale production. In this post, we sit down with Princee from Weddings by Princee to discuss her journey, the reality of DIY weddings, and why hiring a professional is the ultimate luxury for your special day.

From Bride to Professional

Princee’s career in event planning was sparked by her own wedding in January 2020, right before the world changed due to COVID-19. After hiring a planner and seeing the process firsthand, she realized she had the "Type A" personality and organizational skills to excel in the industry. She transitioned from a background in event music to formal planning, completing a certification course and internship hours with established industry mentors.

The Role of a Wedding Planner

A common misconception is that a planner is only for the wedding day itself. In reality, their involvement can span months of logistics:

  • Full Service: Starting up to 14 months out, this includes budget management, creating inspiration boards, managing vendor appointments (tastings, florals, etc.), and designing the day-to-day itinerary.

  • Partial or Day-of Coordination: For couples who have already booked their vendors, a planner can step in to handle the final logistics, such as coordinating hair and makeup schedules, fluffing the dress, and ensuring all personal items are safely packed away at the end of the night.

  • Advocacy: A planner acts as an advocate for the couple. If a vendor is late or service doesn't match the contract, the planner handles the "executive decisions" so the couple doesn't have to.

Why Hire a Planner?

Princee takes a unique stance, often telling clients they don't need a planner—they are paying for convenience and peace of mind.

  • Family Enjoyment: Without a planner, the burden of "running the show" often falls on mothers, sisters, or bridesmaids. Hiring a professional allows your loved ones to be guests rather than staff.

  • The Fine Print: Planners catch the hidden fees in contracts, such as security costs or cleaning fees that couples might overlook when they are excited about a venue.

  • Logistics vs. Design: While some planners specialize in aesthetics, many focus on the "niche" of logistics—managing time, floor plans, and vendor flow to ensure the day runs perfectly.

Trends and Advice

  • The DIY Trap: Many brides try to save money by doing their own centerpieces or decor. Princee warns that DIY often costs the same as hiring a professional once you factor in materials, transportation, and the stress of setup/teardown.

  • Trends We Love: "Merch" is a huge hit—custom sweaters, tumblers, and even perfume bottles for guests.

  • Advice for Success: "Don't sweat the small stuff," says Princee. Focus on making it fun and keeping your priorities in order.
