You've been scrolling for hours.
Four photographers. All stunning feeds. All gorgeous light, all emotional moments, all the kinds of images you could absolutely imagine hanging on your wall.
So now what?
Choosing your wedding photographer is one of the most consequential decisions you'll make in the entire planning process — and the truth is, Instagram tells you very little about who you should actually hire. Here's what we've learned after 15 years in this industry, shooting hundreds of weddings across the Rio Grande Valley and beyond.

1. Ask to See a Full Gallery — Not Just the Highlights
Anyone can curate 20 breathtaking shots. Ask every photographer you're considering to share a complete wedding gallery — getting ready, ceremony, reception, family formals, the whole day.
What you're looking for: consistency. How do the moments between moments look? Is the getting-ready space handled well even in tight, unflattering light? Are the family photos flat, or do they still have life in them? The highlight reel shows you the best 1%. A full gallery shows you what you'll actually receive.
2. Look Beyond the Aesthetic — Study the Editing Style
"Light and airy" and "dark and moody" are starting points, not endpoints. Look deeper. Are skin tones natural or blown out? Do colors hold up in reception lighting? Is the style consistent from the first frame to the last?
Great editing is consistent, natural, and serves the moment rather than competing with it. Make sure what you love on screen will still feel right printed on your wall five years from now.
3. Consider Whether They Offer Photography AND Video Together
If you want both services — and we'd strongly encourage you to consider both — booking a team that does photo and video under one creative vision changes everything about your day.
Two vendors who've never worked together meet on your wedding morning, navigate each other's positioning, and create timeline friction without even meaning to. When we shoot a wedding, our photo and video work in complete sync. The creative direction is consistent. Your day flows better. And you don't end up with a beautiful photo album and a film that feel like they belong to two different weddings.
4. Pay Attention to the Consultation
Before you talk packages, notice what questions they ask. Do they want to know your story — your venue, your vision, what matters most to you? Or do they jump straight to pricing tiers?
A photographer who asks about you will show up differently on your wedding day. That conversation tells you more than any portfolio can.
5. Understand What Pricing Actually Reflects
78% of couples say they won't reach out if pricing isn't visible. Transparency matters. But when comparing quotes, know what the number reflects.
Lower investment often means fewer coverage hours, no second shooter, lighter editing, or less experience navigating the moments that make weddings complicated. Ask what's included. Ask what isn't. This is the only set of images and film you will ever have from your wedding day — the investment deserves a real conversation, not just a comparison spreadsheet.
6. Read Reviews for the Right Things
Star ratings are almost universally five stars in this industry. Read the actual words. Look for phrases like: "made us feel so comfortable," "calm when things ran behind," "captured moments we didn't even notice," or "disappeared into the background."
Those are the intangibles that can't be faked in a portfolio — and they show up in the images because the couple felt safe enough to just be.
7. Trust Your Gut — Seriously
You are going to spend 8 to 12 hours with your photographer on the most emotional day of your life. You need to genuinely like them. You need to feel calm around them. Chemistry isn't a luxury — it shows up in your photos.
If the portfolio is beautiful but the conversation felt off, that matters. If the portfolio isn't your favorite but the photographer understood you immediately and made you feel heard — that matters more than you think.
The right photographer isn't necessarily the one with the most followers or the busiest season. It's the one who will show up for your day, in your light, with your story — and give you something worth keeping forever.
We've been doing this for 15 years. If you're still working through the decision, we're always happy to talk — no pressure, no pitch. Just an honest conversation about what your wedding day deserves.
