Raw Footage vs. The Full-Length Edit: What’s the Difference?

When booking your wedding videography, you’ll come across a few different terms for your final delivery. Lately, we’ve noticed a bit of a mix-up: many couples ask for "raw footage" thinking it will be a long, polished movie of their entire day.

In reality, raw footage and a Full-Length Documentary Edit are two very different things. To help you choose the right package for your memories, let’s break down the differences.

the difference between RAW and Full Edit Video Delivery (Documentary Event Film)

1. What is Raw Footage?

Think of raw footage as the ingredients, not the meal. When we "dump" the raw files onto a drive for you, you are getting hundreds of tiny, separate clips.

  • The Look: These files are often "flat" (uncolored) and might look grey or washed out. This is intentional, as it allows editors to "paint" the colors in later.

  • The Sound: You’ll hear the wind, the camera operator moving, and the "start/stop" of the microphone.

  • The Content: It includes shaky shots, us testing the focus, and five different angles of the same cake. It is a digital archive, not a viewing experience.

2. What is a Full-Length (Documentary) Edit?

This is what most couples are actually looking for when they say they want "everything." A Full-Length Edit (often called a Documentary Film) is a polished, professional version of your entire ceremony and toasts.

  • The Flow: We sync the professional audio from the microphones to the high-quality video.

  • The Polish: We color-grade the footage so the flowers pop and the skin tones look perfect.

  • The Experience: We cut out the camera shakes, the "dead air," and the blurry moments, leaving you with a seamless, watchable version of the event as it happened.

The Documentary Comparison

To put it simply:

Raw Footage is like a documentary filmmaker handing you 500 hours of unorganized tapes. The Full-Length Edit is the actual documentary you watch on Netflix—it tells the whole story from start to finish, but it’s been cleaned up so it’s actually enjoyable to watch.

Why "Buying Raw" Might Not Be What You Want

Some clients want the raw footage because they fear losing a specific moment. However, without professional editing software and a very powerful computer, raw files can be nearly impossible to open or play at home.

If you want to see your full ceremony, the complete speeches, and your first dance in their entirety, you don’t want raw footage—you want a Full-Length Documentary Delivery.
